Since the year 2000 when it experienced its peak with 104,061 arrivals, the cruise sector has consistently recorded declines. In 2008 there were 53% less cruise arrivals when compared to 2007 (35,206 in 2008 and 75,111 recorded in 2009). Of the total cruise arrivals in 2008, 22,248 visited Trinidad and 12,958 visited Tobago. The decline in arriving cruise passengers was despite an increase from 86 ship calls in 2007 to 95 ship calls in 2008.
The hosting of the Summit of the Americas in Port of Spain, Trinidad in April 2009 has resulted in a spike in cruise arrivals during that period and in fact, as at the end of May 2009, there were 86,727 cruise arrivals recorded.
