TDC Arms New Heads of Mission with Destination Information

  May 5th 2016

The Tourism Development Company Limited hosted an orientation session for newly appointed heads of mission at its Head Office in Barataria on Wednesday 3rd May, 2016. The session was designed to sensitise and equip the newly-minted Heads with information that would assist them in promoting destination Trinidad and Tobago in their assigned countries.

His Excellency Fitzgerald Jeffrey, High Commissioner of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago to Kingston Jamaica, His Excellency Dr Lancelot Cowie, Ambassador of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago to Havana, Cuba and His Excellency Dr Amery Browne, Ambassador of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago to Brasilia, Brazil attended the presentation by the TDC’s CEO, Mr. Keith Chin and members of the TDC’s management team.

The Caribbean market is one of the destination’s key source markets for visitors. The presentation focused on the role of the TDC in Trinidad and Tobago’s tourism thrust, and drilled down to the unique characteristics of the Jamaican, Cuban and Brazilian markets where their Excellencies have been assigned.

Jamaica, the country’s largest source market for regional tourism, accounts for 15% of total tourist arrivals from the Caribbean. Cuban visitors represent 3% of the 15% of total tourist arrivals in Trinidad and Tobago. There was a 26% increase in arrivals from Cuba in 2015 over the previous year. In 2015, there was a 29% increase in visitor arrivals from Brazil over 2014, likely due to the introduction of a weekly flight from Brazil to Tobago via St. Lucia.

As the TDC continues its efforts to increase visitor arrivals and boost the contribution of the tourism sector to Trinidad and Tobago’s GDP, the support of the diplomatic missions is valued.

As Heads of Mission, their Excellencies have been charged with supporting the efforts of private and state enterprises with the overseas marketing of their products and services, and the pursuit of tangible investment and market access opportunities. The session held at the TDC forms part of an Orientation Programme for newly appointed Heads of Mission being conducted by Ministry of Foreign and CARICOM Affairs to sensitise the new appointees on key areas that may impact the private and public sectors abroad.
