H1N1 vaccinations for Carnival Visitor Guides
The Tourism Development Company Limited (TDC) on February 11, embarked on a H1N1 vaccination programme to protect Visitor Guides and members of staff who will be on the streets for the Carnival season.
More than 100 Visitors Guides and TDC employees were vaccinated against the H1N1 or Swine Flu virus during the exercise which was held at the company’s head office located at Maritime Plaza, Barataria.
The Visitor Guides and staff, who will be strategically positioned on the streets of Port of Spain, Arima and San Fernando from February 12 to 16, were provided with the vaccinations as a precautionary measure.
“As most of our staff will be out on the field during the Carnival season, the TDC’s Board of Directors has taken a pro-active stance based on the guidelines issued by the Ministry of Health which advises citizens to have the H1N1 vaccine. We have embarked on this vaccination programme to ensure all staff are protected while they perform their duties in providing a critical service to locals and visitors,” said TDC Director Mr Farid Hinds.
The TDC’s Carnival programme includes the positioning of Visitor Guides, equipped with maps, destination brochures and accurate information at strategic locations in Trinidad. The Visitor Guides will be outfitted in orange polo shirts with the TDC logo on the front and the words Visitor Guide Carnival 2010 emblazoned on the back.
Armed with bright smiles and arsenals of information – from Port-of-Spain’s history to where to find a taxi – the Visitor Guides are trained to act as national ambassadors and present a positive face of Trinidad and Tobago.
In addition to assisting tourists and cruise ship passengers, Visitor Guides will play an important role in offering assistance and information to locals who are unfamiliar with the city or merely want information on sites, attractions, shopping or interesting events.
The Visitor Guides training is intense and includes instruction in customer service, communication skills and safety to ensure each Visitor Guide is equipped to perform as a national tourism ambassador.
Fully equipped TDC Visitor Information Booths will be located at the Queen’s Park Savannah (opposite Chancery Lane), the Brian Lara Promenade, the corner of Rushworth and Cipero Streets in San Fernando and at the corner of Hollis Avenue and Woodford Street in Arima.
