Bed and breakfast operators benefit from TDC workshops
In a bid to help bed and breakfast properties to enhance their competitive edge, the Tourism Development Company Limited (TDC) hosted a series of two-day workshops on interior decorating from August 8 – 15, 2007 at its Maritime Plaza, Barataria head office. The workshops are part of the TDC’s Small Tourism Enterprises Project (STEP), which provides technical advice and offers training to small tourism operators. STEP also provides a walk-in resource centre that offers access to publications, audio material, and computer and internet facilities.
The workshops were facilitated by Nicola Niles, a United Kingdom and United States-trained interior decorator with 12 years’ experience. Niles, who holds a Diploma in Interior and Architectural Design, as well as an Associate Degree in Interior Design, specialises in furniture, commercial and hospitality design.
Participants learned how to formulate and implement ideas to create a successful decorating plan. The workshops addressed topics such as space planning, hospitality design, choosing a concept, developing a cohesive, interior style, selecting furniture and furnishings, and choosing accessories such as artwork and lighting. Emphasis was placed on how to achieve a professional, successful, decorative scheme through the effective use of the principles of design.
In line with the TDC’s mandate to establish and implement standards for the development and maintenance of tourism infrastructure and amenities, the Small Tourism Enterprises Project (STEP) aims to offer a comprehensive approach to the development of small tourism enterprises within Trinidad and Tobago. STEP targets owners, managers and staff of small hotels, and small tourism businesses associated with visitor sites and attractions. STEP also targets tourism professionals involved in promoting and marketing Trinidad and Tobago’s tourism industry, entrepreneurs wishing to develop new hotels, businesses and visitor services, and students and persons thinking about a career in tourism.
