Taste Tobago's Blue Food Festival 2009
The Tobago House of Assembly Division of Tourism and Transportation will host the 10th Annual Blue Food Festival at the Bloody Bay/L’Anse Fourmi recreation ground on Sunday 18th October 2009 from 10am to 7pm.
The Blue Food Festival is an all day gastronomic event with a focus on indigenous and creative food offerings. The event is a collaborative effort of the village councils of Bloody Bay, L’Anse Fourmi and Parlatuvier.
The festival traditionally occurs during the month of October as a precursor to the Division’s National Tourism Week Celebrations. This year 15 local cooks will vie for prizes in the Blue Food Cooking Competition and showcase their creativity in designing and producing dishes using the root vegetable Dasheen, the major ingredient. Dasheen, known in the USA as Taro, is also called ‘blue food’ by locals as some versions of the vegetable turn varying shades of blue and indigo when cooked.
The event concept is meant to achieve the following objectives:
- Provide an avenue for villagers in the north-side areas of the island – Parlatuvier, Bloody Bay and L’Anse Fourmi to benefit from an economic activity such as a food festival
- Provide an opportunity for communities to work together and network
- Provide an opportunity for the area to showcase their gastronomic skills
- Develop a festival that would be one of the engines of growth for domestic and community tourism
- Provide an opportunity to strengthen communities and preserve their heritage
- Develop another signature event on the Tobago tourism calendar
The festival committee aims to attract food lovers of all ages and families to the event. There will also be a mini zoo and entertainment by popular local performers throughout the day.
