Panyard Sensations 2009 ends on a high note
The eighth edition of Panyard Sensations ended on a high note on October 4, with a commanding performance from Tobago’s RBTT Redemption Sound Setters Steel Orchestra.
Hosted over two weekends, from September 25 to October 4, the series of steelpan concerts exceeded its usual high standards with a display of polished performances and spectacular community talent.
Highlights from the 2009 Sensations series included the opening night, which featured spirited performances from Tokyo Steel Orchestra at bp Renegades Pan Theatre on Charlotte Street, Port of Spain.
Starlift Steel Orchestra also put on a fantastic show with scintillating performances from guest artistes Desperadoes and Woodbrook Playboyz on October 2, at Starlift’s House of Music, 1 Mucurapo Extension Road, and St James.
From the debut of “Angel Eyes” a new song by soca artist Peter C Lewis, to performances by young saxophonist Style Ramkeran and visually impaired vocalist Niall Manswell, the fourth instalment of Panyard Sensations, proved a winner with the crowd of mainly local pan enthusiasts.
By the time Starlift closed the show, it was 10.20pm - more than an hour beyond the scheduled end.
But as the crowd milled about, seemingly reluctant to leave, Desperadoes started an impromptu jam session which got patrons dancing. It was not till 11pm that the live steelband music came to an end, and even then, the crowd persisted and the lime continued with music supplied by a DJ.
Other participating bands included birdsong Steel Orchestra, Curepe Scherzando, and Tropical Angel Harps.
A collaborative production between The Tourism Development Company (TDC) and Pan Trinbago Inc, Panyard Sensations is a series of community based steelpan events held in the pan body’s four competition zones; north, east, south/central (Trinidad) and Tobago.
